GEMS and Local Policy: Parental Involvement in the Education of Their Children in Dubai

The Dubai School of Government recently issued a Policy Brief entitled, Parental Involvement in the Education of Their Children in Dubai. While the brief is focused on Dubai, the ‘Policy Recommendations’ underline key practices which are already in place in all GEMS UAE schools.
Among the five Policy Recommendations for expanding the role of parents in the education of their children are:

GEMS has recently brought together some of the leading thinkers on Parental Engagement and learning to create its Parental Engagement Advisory Group. The members represent diverse geographic and academic areas, but are united in their expert understanding of the impact of parents on education. Watch this space for contributions from the Group which will further enrich our engagement with our students.

Bill already advises GEMS more widely, was closely involved in creating GEMS Parent Engagement Week in 2010 and writes extensively on the subject of learning and parenting. He is the creator of Family Learning Week in the UK.

Highlights of the 2012 Parental Engagement Week include school visits from Dr. Karen Mapp and Dr. Raymond Hamden, among the many guest speakers who will educate and challenge our GEMS parents.
Dr. Karen Mapp
Dr. Karen L. Mapp is a lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her expertise is in the areas of educational leadership, and partnerships among schools, families, and community. She is co-author of numerous publications including, "Beyond the Bake Sale: the Essential Guide to Family/School Partnerships," and "A New Wave of Evidence: The Impact of School, Family and Community Connections on Student Achievement." An enthusiastic speaker, and authority on home-school partnerships, one of her recent articles is entitled, "Debunking the myth of the hard to reach parent."
GEMS 3rd Annual Parental Engagement Week Guest Speakers
GEMS 2012 “PE” Week is set for 21 to 26 January, and a host of guest speakers will visit our schools to educate parents on the value of engaging in education and equip us with practical strategies for getting into learning with our children.
